Research

Xuefeng “Nick” Peng‘s primary research interest lies in microbial ecology, marine biogeochemistry, and nitrogen cycling. After arriving at UCSB, Nick has developed and combined methods including meta-genomics/transcriptomics, anaerobic cultivation, and analytical chemistry to understand complex microbial interactions between fungi, bacteria, and archaea that result in methane production. As a Simons Postdoctoral Fellow, Nick is investigating the impact of marine fungi on the global biogeochemical cycling of nitrogen and carbon. Oxygen minimum zones and salt marshes are Nick’s favorite field destinations.
