Anaerobic microbial processes serve an important role for the Earth system, acting to remineralize key elements such as carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous, and to transform other elements such as sulfur and iron. We have previously investigated these ecosystems to understand the flow of energy, carbon, and other elements among the microbial community, and to understand the cooperative relationships that emerge and give rise to coupled ecosystem function.
