The biological production of hydrocarbons by phytoplankton is potentially important as a primer for hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria in the ocean, but also with biotechnological application toward biofuel generation. We have been investigating the magnitude of biogeochemical cycle and its importance for priming oil biodegradation.
