The natural marine hydrocarbon seeps at Coal Oil Point, near to UC Santa Barbara, are among the World’s most prolific. We have previously used these and other seeps as natural laboratories, where we can study microbial processes in a natural setting. We have also conducted studies of the seeps themselves, to understand the emergent phenomena that occur in these settings.
